Kerala - Thekkady

Thekkady is in Idukki district of Kerala, and is the location of the Periyar National Park which is an important tourist attraction near to Kumily town. This park is famous for its dense evergreen forest. Here you can find wildlife and birds. The Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve. You can find herds of Elephants, Deer, Sambar, Tigers and many more. Around 250 different species of birds like the Kingfisher, Raptor, Hornbill, Woodpecker can also be seen here.This wildlife sanctuary spread across 777 Sqkms. There is an artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river. A boat cruise on the lake is a great way to watch the wildlife.


How to reach:

The nearest railwaystation is Kottayam, from there you have to catch a bus to Kumily, the journey is around 4 hrs drive(120 kms). The nearest airport is Cochin, which is around 200 kms [5 hrs drive] away.
You can find economy class places to stay in Kumily. Thekkady is 10 min drive from kumily.

Places of Interest:

Periyar National park: Wildlife and Bird sanctuary. Boating is the only way to view the wildlife. Boating facility is available in the Morning and Evening. The best time to watch wildlife is at morning 7am or Evening 4pm.

Trekking: Trekking is available, and its a wonderful way to view the wildlife. 1 day to 4 day trekking with overnight camping is also available.

Spice Garden: You can find lot of Spice gardens. Different kinds of spices and plantation can be found here.

Tea Garden and Tea Factory: You can find lot of tea garden, and you can get permission to enter into tea factory to see how the tea leaves turn into different kind and quality of tea.
